2. Tony Lucca, “Devil Town”Appearance: Season 1, Episode 22
After the Dillon Panthers win the State Championship in the Season One finale, they are paraded through town as conquering heroes. Instead of a triumphant Chariots Of Fire-esque fanfare, we get “Devil Town” playing over the slow-mo, cheering crowds—a classic case of tasteful “FNL” understatement. The song, a wry, rangy Daniel Johnston cover by Austin singer/songwriter Tony Lucca, feels more elegiac than triumphant, and the dark lyrics (“All my friends are vampires in a devil town”) hint at the slightly parasitic edge to the town’s hero worship of these boys. The song gets an ironic reprise in the final season, when it’s announced that the East Dillon Lions will be absorbed into the Dillon Panthers to resolve the town’s budget crisis.
